Book 1: The Brotherhood of Book Hunters
I didn't consciously intend to read in the other of The List, but reading things I already own versus funding my book buying addiction has been top of mind, so here we go.
1. Read a book already on your shelf that you've just never gotten around to reading.
The Brotherhood of Book Hunters by Raphael Jerusalmy
I don't really know why I own this book. I know it wasn't gifted to me and I known it found it's way into my library sometime after 2012, but I can't recall actualizing having bought it (or found it for that matter). The opening line of the summary; however, certainly sounds like the kind of book I'd buy, or so I suppose that's how story goes.
"The Da Vinci Code meets Stephen Greenblatt's The Swerve in this erudite adventure story set at the dawn of the printed book about the outlaw poet Francois Villon and the power of words to change the world."
Unfortunately, I really wanted to like this book, but just couldn't get past the two dimensionality it seemed to have. On one hand there's historical intrigue and far off destinations and plots afoot, and yet on the other you've hit page 70 and some much has happened all while nothing has happened. At times the language was colorful and engaging, and then in others there was a strange disconnect in modern phrases and actions supposed taking place in the 1460's... It just read strange.
While I'm certainly glad I finally read yet another book on my shelf, I'm hoping at the end of the challenge I'll nominate this one for worst book.
